Honest Pro Teeth Guard Review

Pro Teeth Guard is one of the most commonly recommended online brands for custom night guards. I gave it a try since their night guards are a fraction of the cost of one from the dentist.

After I started grinding my teeth while sleeping, I was told by my dentist that Iโ€™d need to get a night guard. Unfortunately, custom-made night guards from the dentist were $600-700, and my insurance wouldnโ€™t cover them. The over-the-counter ones were bulky and didnโ€™t fit right.

This is where custom, online night guard companies like Pro Teeth Guard come in, where you take your own impressions and the guards are made professionally in a dental lab, cutting out the middleman dentist.

In this post, Iโ€™ll go over my experience trying several types of Pro Teeth Guard night guard and share whether or not I think itโ€™s worth it. (Spoiler alert: they are a very legit company and they stand by their 110% Money Back Guarantee).

I paid for my first Pro Teeth Guard night guard and was gifted two other styles for the purposes of this review. Pro Teeth Guard did not have any editorial input and this is my honest opinion. Cost

The cost of a guard ranges from $170 to $210, depending on the style you select. The ones recommended for night grinders are the Hybrid Night Guard ($190) and Hard Night Guard ($210).

With this price, you get free shipping, free adjustments, and their 60-day 110% Money Back Guarantee.

Pro Teeth Guard also frequently has sales around holidays, so I’d recommend signing up for their email list to get notified of those.

Process

Pro Teeth Guard impression kit

Just like you take impressions at the dentist, you’ll need to take impressions for these guards.

You get the impression kit sent to your home, where youโ€™ll mix the putty and take the impressions yourself. The kit comes with two sets of putty for the top and bottom teeth, in case you make a mistake. You need to take both top and bottom impressions for the best fit.

Youโ€™ll first want to refrigerate the putty for at least 20 minutes. While that’s happening, try out the impression trays to see which ones fit best. Then, take the putty out of the fridge and mix the yellow and blue putty together quickly so it becomes gray.

After that, place the putty in the top or bottom tray evenly, open your mouth wide open to align the tray with your teeth, and bite straight down. Youโ€™ll need to hold the tray in your mouth for 4 minutes while it hardens. After you pull out the tray with hardened putty, you’ll need to repeat the process for whichever tray you didn’t do first.

My Experience

Here’s an overview of my experience trying out Pro Teeth Guard.

Taking Impressions

Pro Teeth Guard impressions

The impression process was easy to follow, and Pro Teeth Guard also has a video to show you the exact steps to take. You can also send your impression photos to the Pro Teeth Guard team to get them approved before mailing them back in.

My only issue was that my top teeth are abnormally wide, so none of the trays fit. I had to wait to get an extra wide tray shipped to me, which they expedited when I asked.

This just gave me an extra thing to have to remember each time. When I had to take extra impressions for my first night guard (Hybrid) for the adjustments, they did remember to send an extra wide top tray. However, this is not saved to a customer profile, but only the individual order.

When I got the impression kit for my next two night guards (the Hard and Ultra Thin), I had to go through the same process to request an ultra wide top tray since I’d forgotten to ask upfront. It would be great if this info could be saved under the customer profile.

Getting Adjustments

It took about a month for the finished night guard to arrive. It didn’t fit well at all, and when I bit down, the front of the night guard came up. I believe this was user error, as I don’t think I took the best impressions the first time. While my photos had been reviewed by Pro Teeth Guard technicians, the depth and evenness of the bite is hard to tell from photos.

You can see the extra material in the back of the guard (how the back part is longer than the front)

I took new impressions and sent the night guard back. About another month later, I got a new night guard. The fit was much better, but the bite felt a little off, and the guard made me gag.

I filled out another adjustment form and sent photos of my bite to the technicians. They said they could cut some bulk off the bottom of the guard and asked if I wanted the back teeth to be cut off too. I decided to keep the back teeth since that’s where I saw the most wear in my retainer, but I was fine with the bulk being cut off.

They adjusted my night guard, and I got it back in a couple weeks. This time, it fit well and didn’t make me gag.

This whole process was a longer one (a couple months, not including delays from me being out of town), but I was appreciative that Pro Teeth Guard offered free return shipping and adjustments until I was satisfied.

Refund Process (60-day 110% Money Back Guarantee)

After a couple weeks of wearing the night guard regularly, I noticed that my bite alignment seemed to shift slightly. It also appeared that the very back of the guard had cracked a bit.

I decided to return the Hybrid Night Guard for those reasons, and since it just felt too thick for me. I think I may grind more when I have something more noticeable in my mouth.

Since I was still within the 60-day period after receiving my final adjusted night guard, I was able to return the guard easily with prepaid shipping. I got a full refund to my card, plus an extra 10% back in a check as part of their 110% Money Back Guarantee.

Hybrid vs. Hard vs. Ultra Thin Night Guards

Around the time I was returning the Hybrid night guard, I also got the offer to try other types as part of their affiliate program. So, I tested out the Hard Night Guard and Ultra Thin Guard since they’re thinner than the Hybrid (2mm for Hybrid vs. 1.5mm for Hard and 1mm for Ultra Thin).

The Ultra Thin Guard is recommended for daytime grinding and clenching, but could be okay for light night grinders. I use my retainer mainly as a guard and it’s most similar to the Ultra Thin Guard anyways.

The Hybrid Night Guard is for moderate grinding and has a soft inside + hard outside, hence the thickness.

The Hard Night Guard is for moderate to heavy grinding, and it’s hard on the inside and outside. You need to run it under warm water before putting it on for the best fit.

I took new impressions since the Ultra Thin Guard requires very precise ones. I also requested that any extra bulk at the bottom interior of the guards be removed again so it wouldn’t make me gag.

The Hard Night Guard came back a perfect fit. The Ultra Thin Guard fit my teeth well, but the bite was off. I’m still waiting to take new impressions since I’ve been abroad the last couple months. The Pro Teeth Guard team has been very flexible and understanding even though this goes outside the typical 60-day guarantee.

The Hard Night Guard is a lot more comfortable to wear than the Hybrid, but it is still quite thick for my tastes. I actually prefer the Ultra Thin Guard, which is like my retainer but even harderโ€”it’s not bendy at all.

Keep in mind that I am a lighter grinder and I didn’t know I was grinding until my dentist told me. You may need the Hybrid or Hard Night Guards if you’re a more moderate to heavy grinder.

Quality

The guards are very well-made. The quality and fit are definitely miles away from an over-the-counter guard. I’ve tried and boil-and-bite ones, which are technically “custom,” but extremely bulky to wear. I’ve also tried Plackers, but that made me grind more since the guards are soft and chewy.

For true custom night guards, my points of comparison are my retainer and Remi, another online night guard company. My retainer isn’t a night guard so it’s not exactly a fair comparison, but it’s very similar to the Remi night guard, which is super thin (even though it’s supposed to be 1mm) and very bendy. The Remi night guard doesn’t feel like it will last very long at all. (Plus, I had a terrible experience with Remi’s support team; you can read about it in my full Remi review).

On the flip side, the Ultra Thin Guard from Pro Teeth Guard feels extremely sturdy and durable. Like I mentioned, it’s made from hard plastic, so it’s not bendy at all.

The Hard Night Guard and Hybrid Night Guard also feel very sturdy. While I had a small crack in my Hybrid Night Guard after a couple weeks, it was really easy to return the guard and this sort of thing would be covered under the 1-year warranty.

The Bottom Line

Pro Teeth Guard is a very trustworthy company with quality night guards and solid customer service. I’m really impressed by their 110% Money Back Guarantee and how accommodating they are; they really want you to be happy with your night guard.

The only thing to make sure is that you take very good impressions, and make sure to send them to support for approval. That way, you’re less likely to have to go through the adjustment process, which is free but can take some extra time. If you know you gag easily too, I would ask upfront for the bottom interior of the guard to be shaved down.

Let me know in the comments if you have any questions, and feel free to share your own experience with Pro Teeth Guard!
